Growing girls

Herman Girl #2- 19weeks
I'm so behind in writing this.  Kind of embarrassing. But here's to updating.
Back in December (yes, December) we found out that Herman baby #2 is a girl.  We are excited about another girl.  We have all the decor and clothes :-)  Someday, we'd like a boy (or 2 or 3 or. . . :- ))  but we are glad this one is a girl.  She and Claire will be good friends and not far apart in age.   We are settling on a name and think we might be down to two but think we might be leaning toward one of the two.  We are hesitant to announce the name for a couple reasons. 1.) The way this baby naming has been going this time around, things could always change.  2.) We aren't sure we want to open our thoughts up to opinions yet.  The two names on our list are pretty meaningful (one on a spiritual level) and we just don't want a muddle of everyone else's associations and thoughts yet.  As it gets closer to the big day, we might put it out there, but I'm waiting until it becomes a little more concrete.  We have told a few people some ideas but not many.  We'll get there.

As far as how I'm doing, I'm just starting to feel big and tired.  Tired could be my job these days but I don't think the extra body is helping. I'm 27 weeks pregnant as of this posting and I've heard everything from "wow! you still have until May?!" to "gosh, you hardly look like you just popped out!"  Soo, not sure how I'm doing on size.  All I know is I'm feeling big and know I'm going to get bigger. . . for sure.  My third trimester begins next Tuesday.  Can't believe it's already here.

Claire is growing.  I'm hoping to move her into her next bedroom soon.  We decided to keep the nursery set up for the new baby and to move Claire into the bigger room (we'd been using as a guest room) and redecorate it.  We bought her a little Children's Bed (bigger than a toddler bed, not so big as a twin) at IKEA and a little black wood table with chairs and have put her red toddler reading chair in there.  We moved her clothes and have been encouraging her to play and color and read in this new room.  Christian is going to paint a tree in the room in the next couple of weeks and we are going to buy cubbies for the wall (for books and bins and toys) and put a dresser in her closet.  I'm hoping my next post is pictures of her new room, complete with tree, curtains and cubbies :-)  We'll see how far we get.  My mom's been really very helpful and she's sewing Claire's bedspread and the curtains.  I really should learn to do this myself. . . hmm maybe this summer.

Another bit of Claire news: she's starting to potty train.  I wasn't going to post this anywhere but I slipped up on Facebook when I was so dang excited about Victoria Garden's and their toddler potty and sink, I posted it as my status update.  Cat's out of the bag.  We are officially nuts.  But she's doing great at home.  We are just having a tough time when she's away from home like at the Parent and Me preschool my mom takes her to or at the babysitters (both places she loves and both are places where she loves to play and where she tends to get distracted).  I keep telling myself that I just need a week or two where I'm home and don't have to work in the mornings.  I think it would finish it up but I don't have a full week until April.  So we are doing a slow method, for now.  She is getting better and better at home and we are excited about it.  We'll see how this progresses.

Other things of note: she's graduated from her high chair to a booster, has two of her four 2 year molars, is learning to jump, sing and is a big hit at work where I'm pretty sure she's become the choir mascot.  Recently, she's become the proud owner of a real pair of tennis shoes (went from wearing Robeez to Early Walkers to a real pair of shoes).  She loves babies.  Hopefully, this trait continues.  She'll need to love babies very soon :-)

Nursing: Beginning, middle, end.

***Pre-post disclaimer.  This post is in no way undermining the feeding decisions others have made for their babies.  It is merely our story and my thought process.  There. Disclaimer made.

I'm a big advocate/fan of breastfeeding.  If there is no medical reason why I could not breastfeed, then by all means, I was going to do it. When my original pediatrician told me Claire wasn't gaining enough weight and I had to supplement, I promptly found a supportive pediatrician who did not send me home with formula samples. Claire was just fine. My internal motto when Claire was little was "why on earth would I pay for something can make better myself?"  And I never did.  Despite working (albeit part-time) and pumping (hate pumping) and a baby who, adamantly, refused a bottle and all the stress that caused, I never thought about doing anything but nursing.  I plan to do the same with the next baby.  I'm a pretty big believer.
I had planned to nurse until Claire was, at least, 2 years old.  I remember when Claire was 6 or 7 months old the questions started coming up from friends and outright strangers, "how long are you going to nurse for?" implying that I was already past someone's timeline.  I always thought the question was awfully premature.  "She's a baby" wanted to say.  I don't know. We'll see. . . But then I got pregnant when she was around 15 months and I had a few choices to make.  Claire was still pretty attached to her nursing sessions.  Although, we really only nursed before naps, at bedtime and, occasionally, in the night when she had a particularly rough night.  When I first got pregnant, this wasn't really a big deal.  I've never brought it up with my OB.  I was pretty low risk and felt as though it was not something I needed to talk about with him.  But the further along in the pregnancy I got, the more painful breastfeeding became.  I starting thinking about my "nurse until age two" timeline and thought about how Claire would be about two when the new baby came.  I'd knew I'd, definitely, be going beyond my "two" mark and wasn't sure how much longer than that she'd go.  I started emailing and talking to trusted friends about their experiences tandem nursing and really thinking through whether I thought it was for me.  I thought about weaning.  Considered when the best time would be to do that and considered all the options.
What happened was a little unexpected.  Nursing became increasingly more painful the longer my pregnancy progressed to the point where every time she latched on, I held my breath and nearly cried.  It was starting to get to the point where I couldn't stand it anymore.  This made me lean pretty hard toward the "weaning" idea.  If she had been younger (7, 8, 9 months or so) I think might have just grinned and bore it, however, since she was nearly 19 months and only nursing twice a day for only a few minutes, I was less inclined to want to continue.  I vacillated between really not wanting this nursing to end and outright resenting our nursing relationship.
Yet, I also believe that weaning should be a gentle, preferably child-led process.  I thought ours would not be "child-led" but I wanted to make this gentle as possible.  My plan was to have Christian put her to bed for naps and bedtime for a few days when he was off work. She'd have her daddy.  There might be tears, she would probably be mad but at least she wouldn't expect to nurse.  Up until this point we'd been following Dr. Sears' advice with "don't offer, don't refuse" and it got us down to the two feedings and occasional nights.  I thought I would have to change our strategy.
However, a week before he would have been off work, we went to an early family Christmas party in Simi Valley.  We got home and Claire had fallen asleep in the car on the way home.  She woke up when I went to put her in bed.  She was so overtired she had a really hard time settling down to sleep.  I rocked her and sang to her and in my mind I dreaded her asking to nurse.  I would have, definitely, but, for some reason, that night my breasts were KILLING me.  But she never asked.  Ever.  She cried in my arms and struggled to calm down, we sang and rocked until she was calmly sucking on her stuffed bear.  She fell asleep and woke up a few times that night.  Each time, was content to be rocked and sung to, but never asked to nurse.  The next day, at naptime, same thing.  We read, rocked, sang, I held her tight.  But she never asked.  She got a little distressed like she knew something was missing but never asked and went on to take a long nap. I didn't offer, she didn't ask.  Everything went peacefully.
The last day we nursed was Saturday.  Today is Tuesday.  What is so great about this mostly "natural weaning" is that I never got engorged.  Never felt pain from weaning and missed feedings and Claire was never suddenly, shockingly, tearfully, forced to wean.  I love the verse in the Psalms that says, "But I have calmed and quieted my soul, like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child is my soul within me." (Psalm 131:2 ESV). Images of weaning here are not of pain for the mother and terror for the poor child but of peaceful love and calm assurance for both mother and child.  I won't lie and say I didn't shed a few tears when it really hit me that our nursing was over.  But there's so much peace surrounding our decision.  I'm proud of both of us for making it thus far.  I look forward to nourishing another baby soon.

Updates!

It's been a while since I last posted.  Things have been. . . crazy.  I took on a new job this year.  I'm directing the choir at the middle school and although my hours are part time (7:40-11:30) it is feeling more and more like it is not a part-time job.  Maybe this is because I am close to the Winter Concert and things are CRAZY but there's a definite learning curve and I expend a ton of energy every morning.  There is much to learn and I'm not the best with learning how to organize paperwork.  I'm trying to motivate kids and parents to be more involved.  We have our 1st fundraiser this weekend.  We'll see how this goes.
On top of some of this, Christian's work schedule is a little off.  He works 11:30-8 which brings him home at around 8:30 pm every night.  This is great for babysitting (I leave the house at 6:15 am and get home by noon most days) since he can be with Claire most of the morning but we really don't see much of each other during the week.  I miss dinner with him, putting Claire to bed with him and talking to him at the end of the day. Since I get up to work so early in the morning, I tend to go to bed an hour or two after he gets home.  He's still working on getting his MS degree so, often, I fall asleep to him typing away in the loft.  I feel like we are going 100 miles a second, all the time. He will be done with everything in April and will, hopefully, walk at the end of May.
May. That brings me to why I said "hopefully."  Turns out Claire is going to be a big sister sometime this May. We are very, very excited.  The timing is not "perfect" in our minds, but our minds are so limited.  Christian is supposed to walk around the new baby's "due date" (although, I'm somewhat opposed to "due dates" because of my own beliefs and feelings about birth) and the baby is "due" 9 days before my Spring Concert.  Yup.  I know the One who blessed us with this new life knows what the end of my school year will look like and just the right person to take my choir kids.  He knows how important it is for Christian to be able to walk at graduation.  Christian's worked so hard.  Seems small in comparison to the rest of the world and its issues, but these are big to us.  So we wait, patiently, for all of this to unfold.
We find out the gender the week before or after Christmas.  Neither of us can wait!

Park Days!

Our house is across the street from a little park, pool and basketball court.  One afternoon this summer, I took Claire to the park to practice her walking in the grass on the park lawn.   After her "rigourous" grass walking training, she was rewarded with some time on the jungle gym and mommy had fun with her camera :-)

Summer 2011- A Farewell

Our summer has been done for about a week and a half now.  I loved my summer.  Loved it.  It made me yearn for the day I can be with my girl (and whoever else comes along) full time.  I loved being at my house, working in my home, keeping things clean, teaching my baby new skills, reading to her, taking her to the park and the pool and swimming etc. etc. etc.  Someday, I'm hoping to make this my only job, but for now, I have my summers, and I'm grateful to only work mornings.  Here are some summer highlights.

Aquarium Trip
In June, Claire and I went to the Long Beach Aquarium with her cousin Lila and Aunt Lydia and Uncle Jeff.  I had gotten 4 free tickets for being a teacher so since none of us like to pass up free things to do, we all went out there for the day.  Claire had a blast and took a pretty good stroller nap :-) Only bummer was missing the Lorikeets due to previously mentioned stroller nap.  Oh well. You can't always see everything :-)

LA Zoo

Cindy and I decided to take a trip to the LA Zoo with Claire.  Her family was supposed to go with us but that fell through at the last minute.  Since we were all dressed and ready to go, we decided to go anyway, Claire's favorite animal was CLEARLY the flamingos but she also liked the black bear, the rhinos, hippo, giraffes, zebras and elephants (although you couldn't see them very well).  The sheep in the petting zoo were a big hit as well!

  4th of July
For the fourth we did our traditional BBQ at the Samsons then walk over to watch the YL Fireworks show.  In the morning, good friends of ours helped us paint the guest room (the room next door to Claire's) We are eternally grateful for this since the job was a little more overwhelming than we anticipated.  We are hoping to do some more painting soon but at least now we know more what to expect.  After Claire's nap, we headed out to the Samson's for the BBQ.  I was a little worried about the evening since Claire has an early bedtime but her nap was PERFECT that day.  Slept longer than normal and was fantastic for the firework show.  I was also a little nervous about how she would react to the noise and bright lights of the show.  But she handled it like a pro and watched in complete awe with her buddy Logan (who was a few weeks shy of his 1st birthday) We love being with friends for the fourth.

Swimming

During the sumer, Claire took swim lessons at Aquatic Zone in Corona.  Every Monday morning, the two us us would put our swimsuits on and go to the lesson.  Claire LOVED it.  This was the idea.  I really, really, really want her to be pool safe.  Really.  We live across the street from a pool and my in-laws have a pool.  It's just maddening for me to imagine not teaching her swim at a young age.  Maybe I'm paranoid but I think I'll feel much better when I know my little girl can float and swim to the wall if she ever fell in the pool.  It was so fun to watch her go from a clueless toddler to being able to (almost) climb out of the pool, confidently have her head dunked and walk along the wall with her hands.  She is starting to get the idea of kicking and blowing bubbles.  Luckily the swim center is indoor.  We took the month of September off to get ourselves settled, but I will be taking her back in October in the afternoons to continue having her swim so maybe next summer, she'll be even better :-)

Los Osos Trip and Great Grandpa's 80th Birthday
Claire's Great Grandpa (my Grandpa) turned 80 years old on August 12th.   For his birthday, our entire family took a trip up to Los Osos (Morro Bay area) and rented a house for all of us to stay in.  It was a fantastic house and everyone seemed to have a great time.  Claire took her first steps in front of the entire family on that trip, chasing after Auntie Laura.  We were so blessed to be with everyone in such a beautiful place celebrating such a wonderful person who has given us so much, spiritually and emotionally and always makes sure our physical needs are met as well.  Grandpa is one of the most amazing influences on my life and on the lives of his children and my cousins and, really, everyone he meets.

Mamma Turns 31 (and relives 13)
I turned 31 this August.  On a whim, I mentioned to a friend that, for my birthday, I'd like to ride a horse.  I took lessons as a kid and the last time I'd been on a horse was when I took a trail ride through Bryce Canyon several years ago.  I didn't think I was going to actually get to do it, you see, but Cindy told Cheryl what I had said and the next thing I know, I'm in my jeans, on a horse riding around the Yorba Linda arena.  So. much. fun. Claire met a horse up close (she'd seen them before since we have a bunch by our house) and I got to meet "Buddy" :-)

Whew.  Quite a summer.   Back to a new working part time but this year, a very new adventure.    That, though, is for another post.

There shall be eternal summer in the grateful heart.  ~Celia Thaxter
